Social capital as an economic resource: subject matter and methodological approaches to its evaluation

The article defines the subject matter, main characteristics and functions of social capital as an economic resource. The theoretical and methodological approaches of its evaluation are unified and classified. The present article offers a list of markers, which can be used to evaluate social capital on different levels of economics functioning.
The research is based on general scientific and specifically economic methods. Interdisciplinary analysis is used. Sociological and behavioral criteria were distinguished as the main criteria in the classification of approaches to social capital evaluation. To explain possible positive and negative outcomes of social capital accumulation, the cause-and-effect analysis is used. The author singles out the markers that can be used to evaluate social capital functioning on nano-, micro-, meso- and macro-levels of economics. Economic and social efficiency of social capital functioning are distinguished.
The subject matter and evaluating criteria of social capital are characterized from the perspective of representatives belonging to different social and behavioral studies. The following approaches are singled out: sociological; complex; oriented toward measuring the components of social capital on micro-, meso- and macro-levels of economic relationships functioning; investment-based; behavioral; social accounting; based on analysis of positive and negative effects of using social capital; institutional; modernization-based and properly economic ones.
Possibility of social capital evaluation on different levels of economy is justified from economic perspective. Methods of measurement and markers defining economic efficiency of social capital are singled out, which gives a possibility to analyze the level of social capital usage more profoundly in terms of implementing modern economic targets.
The stated approaches to social capital evaluation have interdisciplinary character. Economic approach to its evaluation is based on interpreting social capital as an economic resource. Practical importance of the present research consists in possible application of the stated approaches to solve typical issues for economic activity, such as fulfillment of social obligations, opportunistic behavior, search for resources, coordination of market players’ actions, and optimization of economic entities’ interaction on different levels of economy.
