The Great Chinese Transformation: From the Third World to the First

Ekon. teor. 2020; 2:5-19https://doi.org/10.15407/etet2020.02.005

ABSTRACT ▼

In an era of irreversible globalization, world economic and political rules of the game must take into account the growing importance of China. Instead of fighting this country, it is necessary to cooperate pragmatically with it in solving growing global problems. At present, China must adapt to the outside world, and the world itself must adapt to China. It is impossible to impose on this country a model developed elsewhere, especially since today liberal democracy in many countries is experiencing a systemic crisis. There is also no way to impose the Chinese model on others (although for many countries this may seem possible); it is not an export “product”, although its elements may be useful in other countries. China does not seek world domination; instead, it integrates sequentially with the outside world in order to maintain its own development. The only reasonable way forward is through careful observation, peer education and pragmatic cooperation based on unorthodox economic thought.
