European values: the intellectual property of the civilizational dialogue

Ekon. teor. 2018; 3:5-28https://doi.org/10.15407/etet2018.03.005

ABSTRACT ▼

It is revealed that European culture has been historically oriented to humanity. The results of high philosophical studies, pioneering achievements of science, masterpieces of art and literature, technological innovations of the European class invariably became the property of all mankind. For the countries and peoples of the post-Soviet space, European cultural values are of particular importance. But in the era of global market oriented transformations, the traditional concepts of the European cultural heritage need to be reconsidered.
The author shows that, in the general civilization heritage, the scientific knowledge accumulated by the society is of remarkable value. The importance of fundamental scientific knowledge as a public good was understood in antiquity. The phenomenon of historical dialogue between representatives of the best minds of antiquity and the Middle Ages laid the foundation for the formation of classical European philosophy and science of modern times. It is from the precious intellectual alloy of "Christian Aristotelianism", that those civil society institutions that until now constitute the subject of pride of European nations and models for imitation throughout the world were forged. At the same time, however, the basis for a new understanding of the laws and arrangement of public life involves the historically formed contradictions and paradoxes of fundamental scientific knowledge.
It was discovered that post-Soviet countries have been mastering the fruits of the European civilizational heritage jointly and gradually. In the course of the market oriented transformation of the economy, the problem of the formation of effective development institutions is critical for the normal adaptation of these countries to global challenges. However, the civilizational experiences should be borrowed in a prudent manner. The process should be based on adequate methodological foundations, and take into account the overall inversive character of the development of the intellectual sphere and economic life in general.

Keywords: historical cultural heritage, fundamental scientific knowledge as a public good, inversion character of global social transformations, intellectual dialogue, European civilizational values
